Regensburg University Hospital, which had previously been run as a dependent government enterprise was set up as a public-law institution of the Free State of Bavaria with legal capacity on 1st June 2006. It aids the university in the fulfilment of its research and teaching tasks in a special way as well as aiding scientific progress; it performs tasks in the field of medical care to this end.
The hospital is under the legal supervision of the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art.

Regensburg University Hospital does take part in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board in accordance with the German Consumer Dispute Resolution Act (VSBG) and has no obligation to do so (Section 36 (1) VSBG).
Medical Device Safety Officer
In accordance with Section 6 German Medical Device Operators Ordinance (MPBetreibV), the Medical Device Safety Officer shall, as a key position at Regensburg University Hospital, perform the tasks of a contact for authorities, manufacturers and distributors in connection with risk reports relating to medical devices and the implementation of necessary corrective measures.
