Oral mucosa diseases

The oral mucosa reacts to a wide variety of symptoms but can also be exclusively the site of a disease. Infectious diseases such as fungal diseases, measles, herpes or even HIV infections can appear on the oral mucosa. But even diseases that affect the entire digestive tract or the skin are noticeable there. To ensure an adequate treatment, the cause of the oral mucosa disease must be found. One disease of the digestive tract which can appear on the oral mucosa, amongst other places, is Crohn’s disease. An example of a skin disease in which the oral mucosa plays a part is the blister-causing epidermolysis bullosa (congenital skin disease). Changes to the oral mucosa that involve a whitish colouring of the mucous membrane are another important symptom (e.g. leucoplakia, lichen planus).

Diagnosis and treatment

Because some of these diseases involve a low risk of cancer formation, we offer defined treatment concepts. Treatment includes both drug treatment as well as surgical treatment, including laser treatment. An important focus of the clinic is state-of-the-art early detection of oral cancer using minimally invasive procedures such as a brush biopsy or photodynamic diagnosis.

Tumours in the mouth/jaw/face area

The clinic’s range of treatments comprises the diagnosis and treatment of all benign and malignant changes to the skin and mucous membrane of the head, throat, mouth and maxillary sinus (for example, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, haemangioma). Special neoplasms of the craniofacial bones, the jaw and the teeth are also treated (for example, ameloblastoma, cysts).

Diagnosis and treatment

Our primary focus is the early detection and timely treatment of tumour diseases according to the latest scientific criteria. The mouth/jaw/face area, which is important for food intake and interpersonal communication, should be both aesthetically and functionally rehabilitated. Our treatment concepts are supported by a thorough aftercare of tumour patients, in order to detect and treat a possible recurrence (recrudescence) at an early stage. For this purpose, we maintain standardised aftercare protocols within the framework of a special consultation, which are based on the guidelines of national and international medical associations. Treatment options include the entire range of surgical possibilities for tumour removal and the restoration of the affected areas with bone and skin transplants, also with the aid of microsurgical techniques. Restoration of the chewing function with the aid of tooth implants is also a part of the clinic’s range of treatments.

Specialists in the head and throat tumour centre

Treatment is tailored to the individual patient and includes close interdisciplinary cooperation with the clinics for otorhinolaryngology, radiotherapy and internal medicine, amongst others. With this specialist discipline, we have joined forces to form a head and throat tumour centre certified by the German Cancer Society. We also cooperate closely with rehabilitation facilities that have specialised in improving the speech and swallowing function of patients after surgical procedures in the head and throat area.
