Liver Diseases & Liver Transplantation

We offer all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the treatment of liver diseases in close cooperation with Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Human Genetics, Clinical Chemistry and Pathology.

    • Gastroscopy and colonoscopy including sclerotherapy of oesophageal varicose veins
    • Endoscopic visualisation of the bile ducts, also in infants and newborns (ERCP)
    • Radiological imaging of blood vessels in the liver (angiography)
    • Genetic testing and counselling for hereditary cholestasis syndromes (Alagille syndrome, Byler's disease, Byler syndrome, PFIC all types etc.) and other liver diseases
    • Histological examination of liver samples including electron microscopy
    • Laboratory chemical analysis of bile acid profiles
    • Liver puncture and sonography
    • Surgical treatment of biliary atresia (Kasai operation)
    • Liver transplantation including transplantation in newborns,
    • in particular split liver transplantation of split organs,
    • living donation from a relative, and
    • the temporary transplantation of an organ while preserving the patient's own liver, known as auxiliary liver transplantation.
    • Liver replacement procedures for acute liver failure (e.g. MARS or Prometheus dialysis)
    • Treatment of vascular and biliary tract diseases using catheters (interventional radiology)
    • Surgical creation of vascular shunts, e.g. for the treatment of portal vein thrombosis (shunt surgery, Rex shunt)

As the Centre for Rare Diseases in Childhood (SEK-KUNO), we are an integral part of the Centre for Rare Diseases.
