Bowel cancer

We offer patients with colon cancer or colorectal carcinoma the best possible treatment according to the latest recommendations issued by professional associations and published in medical literature. Colon cancer is one of the main areas of treatment in our department. We operate on around 100 patients with colon cancer each year. And the trend is rising. Working together with colleagues from other specialist disciplines, we at UKR can offer you the highest level of expertise and knowledge.

Colon cancer (colorectal carcinoma)

Colon cancer, or colorectal carcinoma, is the second most common tumour disease in both women and men. It can be hereditary, occur in connection with chronic inflammatory bowel disease, or occur spontaneously. Surgery is the most important means of treating colon cancer in order to achieve maximum chances of recovery and prevent the tumour from recurring.

  • The surgical treatment of colorectal cancer is a particular focus of our department. We endeavour to achieve the best possible quality by monitoring successful outcomes, as the expertise of the surgeon is a proven predictive factor in the treatment of colorectal cancer, as demonstrated in several prospective randomised studies. Multimodal therapy is particularly important in this regard. In other words, depending on the stage of the tumour, patients undergo chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy before or after surgery.

    Low rate of recurrence

This approach to treatment, combined with the high quality of our surgical procedures, has enabled us to achieve a local recurrence rate (tumour reappearance) of less than 6% in recent years, which is significantly lower than the international standard. The high level of surgical expertise in colorectal cancer has led to a significant increase in the proportion of sphincter preservation procedures in recent years. A similar result appears to be achieved by optimised surgical techniques that preserve autonomic nerve structures, thereby avoiding sexual dysfunction and bladder emptying issues following this type of operation.

    Psychological support

In addition, we provide support to those affected by psychological problems arising from tumour diagnosis and treatment.

    Diverticulitis

We also offer a wide range of minimally invasive procedures designed to treat diverticulitis (protrusions in the large intestine, also known as a ‘disease of affluence’).

  • Having treated over 3,000 patients for colon cancer, the UKR's Clinic for Surgery has extensive expertise in the field of colorectal cancer surgery.

    Over 1,500 endoscopic operations

A key feature of the UKR is its extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer, with over 1,500 endoscopic operations performed to date for benign and malignant colon diseases.

    Effective and painless

These innovative surgical techniques offer maximum freedom from pain and effectiveness while following the principles of radical tumour surgery and achieving the best outcomes in terms of quality of life.

Highest number of minimally invasive operations

This wealth of experience distinguishes the UKR as one of the leading clinics worldwide, at national and international level, with the highest number of minimally invasive operations performed for the surgical removal of colon cancer.

  • Our department has established a special consultation service for patients with colon tumours. This consultation provides an opportunity to discuss all diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of colon cancer treatment. In addition, an interdisciplinary tumour board, involving specialists from other departments such as internal medicine, radiology, radiotherapy, oncology and pathology, agrees on treatment strategies for each individual tumour patient. Our goal is to provide every patient with the best possible personalised treatment.
