Chronic inflammatory bowel disease

Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) – Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis – are the main focus of treatment here in our department. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, and causes inflammation, ulcers and thickening of the intestinal wall. Ulcerative colitis mainly affects the large intestine (colon) and rectum, with inflammation limited to the inner mucous membrane and often forming ulcers. Both conditions cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea and weight loss, and occur in episodes with periods of improvement and deterioration. The exact cause of both diseases is unknown. They are considered to be autoimmune diseases where the immune system attacks the intestines.

Customised treatment plan

At Regensburg University Hospital, a customised treatment plan is developed for each patient with either of these conditions. This is the only way to achieve the best possible treatment for patients affected by Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Interdisciplinary cooperation plays a central role in this. The doctors treating patients at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Surgery and the Clinic and Polyclinic for Internal Medicine I work closely together and always provide joint treatment for complex clinical conditions.
