Peritoneal carcinomatosis
Peritoneal carcinomatosis (peritoneal cancer) is a form of cancer in which tumour cells spread and settle in the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and internal organs. This often leads to fluid accumulating in the abdomen (ascites), abdominal pain and digestive problems.
Result of cancer
Peritoneal carcinomatosis usually develops as a result of cancer in organs such as the stomach, intestines or ovaries that metastasises and affects the peritoneum. The prognosis depends on the extent and origin of the cancer. Treatment often involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and targeted therapies.
Interdisciplinary approach to treatment
The treatment of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Surgery at Regensburg University Hospital is carried out using an interdisciplinary, multimodal approach to treatment.
The key component of this approach is the combination of surgery to remove the visible tumour (cytoreductive surgery, CRS) and immediate heated chemotherapy in the abdominal cavity (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, HIPEC).
You will be accompanied by our specialised team throughout the entire treatment period, from admission to inpatient care to follow-up treatment.
