Die Internistische Intensivmedizin beschäftigt sich schwerpunktmäßig mit der Optimierung extrakorporaler Systeme. Untersuchungen zur Inzidenz und Vermeidung klinischer Komplikationen, insbesondere Gerinnungsstörungen und thrombembolischer Ereignisse, werden ergänzt durch Grundlagenforschung zur Biokompatibilität moderner ECMO Systeme. Im klinischen Bereich arbeiten Forschungsgruppen unter anderem an Untersuchungen zur Langzeitanwendung von Lungenunterstützungssystemen. Die Identifizierung früher prädiktiver Marker für die neurologische Erholung nach Reanimation unter E-CPR stellt einen weiteren Fokus einer Arbeitsgruppe dar.
